    CFL bulbs

Philips compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL) are an affordable, energy saving option for lighting your home or office. CFL bulbs combine the energy efficiency of fluorescent lighting with the convenience and light quality of incandescent bulbs.

Compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs use up to 75% less energy and can last 6 to 15 times as long (6.000 – 15.000 hours). CFLs work best and have the most efficiency in areas where lights are on for long periods.

CFL bulbs fit easily in your light fixtures, from table lamps and recessed lighting to decorative fixtures. They are available in familiar shapes and sizes and offer a range of light color temperatures, including soft white or natural daylight.

What is the history of compact fluorescent light bulbs?

CFL light bulbs were introduced in the mid-1980s as an energy efficient replacement for household incandescent light bulbs. Their performance, efficiency, and lifespan have improved since 1990. The Philips CFL bulb is an affordable, long-lasting and energy saving choice to use at home. Many of these CFL bulbs earn the Energy Star label.

How do compact fluorescent bulbs work?

Light from a fluorescent bulb is first created by an electric current conducted through an inert gas. This produces an ultraviolet light that is invisible to the human eye. The ultraviolet light interacts with special blends of phosphors that coat the inside surface of the fluorescent bulb tube. This turns the invisible light into visible white lights. Fluorescent bulbs require a special power supply called a ballast. The ballast regulates the bulb operating current to provide a compatible start-up voltage. CFL bulbs with screw and GU24 bases have a built-in ballast.

Where can I use compact fluorescent bulbs?

Perfect for task lighting in garages, basements, home offices, and other spaces that need extra brightness, compact fluorescent bulbs last up to 10 times longer than incandescent and can use up to 75% less energy.
