Do public lighting installations
affect a city?

KuDa Photography on behalf of Philips Lighting

The I-35W Bridge revitalization

It’s no secret that public lighting installations can have a meaningful effect on areas that reaches far beyond the purpose of simply providing light. They can also have a positive impact on economic development, neighborhood revitalization, tourism, and community pride. Especially during major events, these impacts are multiplied by the proliferation and use of digital tools on social media.

The LED connected lighting system supplied by Philips Lighting uses Philips ActiveSite System, a cloud-based connected lighting platform that provides remote monitoring, maintenance, and management capabilities to ensure operational efficiency and the ability to program the lights without being tethered to the bridge. Reporting tools and historical analysis also provide unprecedented insight into system operations, which authorized system managers from the MN DOT can use to evaluate and optimize performance.

Minneapolis I-35 Bridge Installation Blue Lighting

The connected lighting system used on the I-35W Bridge in Minneapolis, will include more than 650 Philips Color Kinetics outdoor architectural lighting fixtures, including the ColorGraze MX4 Powercore, ColorBlast Powercore gen4, and ColorReach Powercore gen2. These fixtures have been specially designed to meet the extreme vibration, temperature and corrosive environment conditions that the bridge is exposed to. The connected luminaires offer an expanded palette with millions of intensely saturated colors or finely tuned pastels and hues in a variety of beam angles enabled by sophisticated optical technologies to accentuate the many facets of the bridge. These capabilities also allow the LED lights to produce hundreds of possible configurations and light distribution patterns to create static displays or dynamic color shows that, for instance, can be used to celebrate holidays, important civic causes, or special events such as one of the largest sporting events in the world.

Philips Color Kinetics lighting fixtures have been used in more than 50,000 lighting projects across the world including iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building, the Bay Bridge and City Hall in San Francisco and the Zakim Bridge in Boston to name a few important ones in the United States. There are many more globally such as  the London EyeEdinburgh Castle, the Taishin Bank Tower in Taipei, the Warsaw Spire, the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Gateway of India in Mumbai.
